Ahhh Winter…I love winter!  Call me crazy, but I love the cold air, the snow, winter activities, but I hate what it does to my skin.  See I have eczema.  I try and drink plenty of (warm) water and put on our awesome body butter and eczema cream, but I’m noticing that it’s getting worse and I believe it maybe my diet.

In August of 2016 I started to notice not only on my shins, but on my hands.  My diet wasn’t the greatest as I was traveling Southeast Asia in July of that year and was eating things I shouldn’t have been eating, i.e. gluten, dairy and eggs.  I knew I had an intolerance to these items and was going to pay the price.  Usually I just have gut issues, but I started to notice that my hands were getting red and inflamed.  I went to the doctor to figure out what was going on with my hands.  They took a biopsy and it came back as me having eczema.  They gave me some medicine which I never used.

In the past I read a health article saying that food allergies are the root cause of eczema and that using topical creams just masked the problem.  Hmmm.  So I tried something…for 2 weeks I started to write down everything I ate and what effect it had on my body, inside and out.  I noticed that when I ate gluten, dairy or eggs within a day or two my hands would flare up, not to mention other things happening below the surface… i.e. bloating, gas, nausea, joint pain, brain fog and mood swings.  I decided there I would change my lifestyle…I would eat whole foods (I went vegan…later on that) and do some form of exercise everyday (walk, calisthenics or ballet).

Just making slight changes in my daily routine really helped.  Keeping away from harmful foods, meditating, exercising and discipline is all it took.  It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.  In a matter of days, I noticed a difference on my hands and body.  The itching subsided, I was also sleeping better and felt better overall (BONUS!!!).
